Skalnivåer

Skalnivåer refers to the different ways data can be measured and categorized. There are four commonly recognized levels: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio.

Nominal scales are the simplest level of measurement. Data at this level are categorized into distinct groups without any inherent order or ranking. Examples include gender, eye color, or type of car. The categories are mutually exclusive and exhaustive.

Ordinal scales involve data that can be ranked or ordered, but the differences between the ranks are not necessarily equal or quantifiable. Examples include survey responses like "poor," "fair," "good," and "excellent," or finishing positions in a race (1st, 2nd, 3rd). While we know the order, we cannot say how much better "good" is than "fair."

Interval scales measure data where the order is important and the differences between consecutive values are equal and meaningful. However, interval scales lack a true zero point. Temperature measured in Celsius or Fahrenheit is a common example. A temperature of 20 degrees Celsius is hotter than 10 degrees, and the difference is consistent. However, 0 degrees Celsius does not mean the absence of temperature.

Ratio scales are the most informative level of measurement. They have all the properties of interval scales (order and equal intervals) and also possess a true zero point, meaning zero represents the absence of the quantity being measured. Examples include height, weight, age, and income. For instance, a person weighing 100 kilograms is twice as heavy as someone weighing 50 kilograms. The zero point is meaningful, as zero weight means no weight. Understanding these different skalnivåer is crucial for choosing appropriate statistical analyses and interpreting data accurately.
