Skallmodeller, often translated as scale models, are miniature replicas of real-world objects, typically vehicles, buildings, or figures. These models are created at a reduced size, maintaining a specific ratio to the original item, hence the term "scale." Common scales include 1:72, 1:35, 1:24, and 1:144, each representing a different level of reduction.

The hobby of building scale models is diverse, encompassing a wide range of subjects. Aircraft models, for instance, are very popular, with builders meticulously recreating fighter jets, bombers, and civilian airliners. Military vehicles, such as tanks, trucks, and artillery pieces, also form a significant segment of the hobby. Model ships, from ancient galleons to modern warships, and architectural models, depicting buildings and cityscapes, are other prominent categories. Figure modeling, focusing on historical or fantasy characters, is also a well-established area.

Model kits are typically made from plastic, though materials like resin, metal, and wood are also used, especially for more specialized or high-end models. Building a scale model often involves assembling numerous small parts, followed by painting and weathering to achieve a realistic appearance. This process can range from simple snap-fit kits for beginners to highly detailed kits requiring advanced modeling skills. The appeal of scale modeling lies in the combination of historical interest, artistic expression, and the satisfaction of creating a detailed replica.
