Situtins

Situtins are a fictional group of microscopic aquatic organisms described in speculative biology and science fiction settings. They are depicted as ranging from single-celled forms to small colonial aggregates, typically possessing a rigid silica-based exoskeleton and a luminescent outer layer. The name is used for both the group and its individual members, the situtins.

Size and morphology: individual cells measure roughly 2 to 8 micrometers in diameter. The silica exoskeleton forms a lattice of platelets that can give a glassy, faceted appearance. Many situtin species exhibit bioluminescence, producing blue-green light when disturbed or at night.

Physiology and ecology: Situtins are often described as mixotrophic, combining photosynthesis with uptake of nanoscale organic particles. In colonies, cells secrete a mucous-like matrix that anchors mats to substrates such as rock, wood, or seagrass. The life cycle typically alternates between motile vegetative cells and sessile mats, with reproduction mainly by binary fission and sporulation.

Habitat and role: Situtins are associated with temperate coastal waters, estuaries, and shallow seas. They may form dense mats that serve as microhabitats for protozoans and small invertebrates, and are sometimes used in fictional models of nutrient cycling and primary production. In speculative biology, situtins can be sensitive indicators of pollution and climate change.
