Sinteringssteget refers to the sintering stage in materials processing, a crucial step in the production of many solid objects from powdered materials. This stage involves heating a compacted powder mass, known as a "green compact," to a temperature below its melting point. The elevated temperature provides the thermal energy for atomic diffusion to occur across the particle boundaries.

During sintering, the individual powder particles coalesce and bond together. This process is driven by a reduction in surface energy. As particles fuse, the total surface area of the material decreases, leading to a more stable, lower-energy state. Key mechanisms at play include surface diffusion, grain boundary diffusion, and volume diffusion. The extent of sintering is influenced by factors such as temperature, time, particle size, and the presence of any additives or binders.

The result of successful sintering is a dense, solid component with improved mechanical strength, hardness, and reduced porosity. The degree of densification achieved during sintering is a critical determinant of the final properties of the material. For example, in powder metallurgy, sintering transforms a loosely packed powder into a functional metal part. In ceramics, it creates strong, durable components from ceramic powders.
