When used in scientific writing, a closely related and more common term is sulfate sink, which describes processes that remove sulfate from solution or from a given environment.

Sulfate sinks are an important part of the global sulfur cycle. They encompass natural and anthropogenic mechanisms that decrease dissolved sulfate concentrations by converting it to reduced forms or solid minerals. Key natural sinks include microbial sulfate reduction, where sulfate is biologically reduced to sulfide by sulfate-reducing bacteria under anaerobic conditions, and subsequent formation of sulfide minerals such as pyrite. Other pathways involve the precipitation of sulfate minerals, such as gypsum or anhydrite, or adsorption of sulfate onto mineral surfaces in soils and sediments, followed by burial.

In geological and environmental contexts, sulfate sinks influence water chemistry, sediment composition, and contaminant dynamics. Ocean sediments constitute a major long-term sink for sulfur, while freshwater systems may exhibit varying sulfate removal depending on organic matter, minerals, and redox conditions. Human activities, including mining, wastewater discharge, and fossil fuel combustion, can alter the balance of sulfate inputs and sinks, sometimes increasing sulfate deposition or changing its partitioning in ecosystems.

Because the term "sinksulfat" is potentially ambiguous, clarifying the intended meaning—whether referring to sulfate in general or to a specific process, mineral, or product—is advisable in scientific communication.
