Siloituminen
Siloituminen is a Finnish term that describes the process of enclosing and preserving feedstuffs, typically fodder crops like grass, legumes, or maize, in an airtight container known as a silo. This anaerobic fermentation process, driven by naturally occurring lactic acid bacteria, transforms the organic material into a stable, palatable, and nutrient-rich feed for livestock. The key to successful siloituminen lies in excluding oxygen, which prevents spoilage by aerobic bacteria and molds.
The process begins with harvesting the forage at an optimal stage of maturity and wilting it slightly
During the anaerobic fermentation, lactic acid bacteria convert sugars present in the forage into lactic acid
