Silmäonteloihin

Silmäonteloihin refers to the plural form of silmäontelo in Finnish, which translates to orbital cavities or eye sockets in English. These are the bony structures within the skull that house the eyeballs. Each orbit is a roughly pyramidal-shaped cavity, with the apex pointing inwards towards the cranial cavity and the base forming the opening that is visible on the face.

The orbital cavity is formed by contributions from several bones of the skull, including the frontal bone, maxilla, zygomatic bone, sphenoid bone, ethmoid bone, lacrimal bone, and palatine bone. These bones provide protection for the delicate structures within the eye socket.

Within the orbital cavity, the eyeball itself is cushioned by a layer of orbital fat, which also helps to keep it in place. Several muscles, known as the extraocular muscles, are attached to the eyeball and control its movement. Nerves, including the optic nerve, and blood vessels also pass through the orbital cavity to serve the eye and surrounding tissues. The lacrimal gland, responsible for producing tears, is also located within the orbit. Damage to the orbital cavity can result from trauma, infections, or various medical conditions, potentially affecting vision and facial structure.
