Silikoonhüdrogeel is a modern material used primarily in the manufacturing of soft contact lenses. It is a combination of silicone and hydrogel, two different types of polymers. Hydrogel components provide water-retaining properties, making the lenses comfortable and breathable by allowing oxygen to pass through to the cornea. The silicone component significantly increases the oxygen permeability of the lens, which is crucial for maintaining eye health, especially during extended wear.

This improved oxygen transmission, often measured by Dk/t values, is a key advantage of silicone hydrogel lenses over older hydrogel materials. Higher Dk/t means more oxygen reaches the eye, reducing the risk of hypoxia, corneal swelling, and infections. Silicone hydrogel lenses are also known for their durability and resistance to protein deposits, which can cause discomfort and blurry vision.

The development of silicone hydrogel technology has allowed for the creation of lenses suitable for daily wear, extended wear (including overnight), and even continuous wear for up to 30 days, depending on the specific lens design and recommended usage. These lenses come in various designs, including spherical, toric (for astigmatism), and multifocal (for presbyopia) options, catering to a wide range of vision correction needs. The material's properties contribute to enhanced visual acuity and comfort for many contact lens wearers.
