Silikageeleissä

Silikageeleissä, often referred to as silica gel, are a granular, porous form of silicon dioxide (SiO2) that is typically used as a desiccant. They are synthesized chemically from sodium silicate. While silica gel is chemically inert, it is highly hygroscopic, meaning it readily absorbs moisture from the surrounding environment. This property makes it an effective drying agent.

Silica gel is produced in bead or granular form and can be regenerated by heating, which drives off the absorbed water. This regeneration process allows for repeated use. The porous structure of silica gel provides a large surface area, which is key to its absorbent capabilities. The pore size can be controlled during manufacturing, leading to different grades of silica gel with varying absorption capacities and particle sizes.

Common applications for silica gel include protecting goods from moisture damage during shipping and storage. It is often found in small packets inside product packaging for items such as electronics, leather goods, and pharmaceuticals. It is also used in industrial processes, chromatography, and as a catalyst support. Indicating silica gel, which changes color upon absorbing moisture, is also available, providing a visual cue when the desiccant is saturated and needs regeneration.
