Sijamerkinnällä, which translates to "location marking" or "positional notation" in English, refers to a fundamental concept in mathematics and computing where the position of a digit within a number determines its value. This is the basis of positional numeral systems, the most common of which is the decimal system (base-10). In the decimal system, the number 123 means (1 * 10^2) + (2 * 10^1) + (3 * 10^0), where the position of each digit (1, 2, and 3) dictates whether it represents hundreds, tens, or units.
