Sijaissynnytysjärjestelyt, often referred to as surrogacy arrangements, involve a woman (the surrogate mother) carrying and giving birth to a child for another individual or couple (the intended parents). This arrangement is typically made when the intended parents are unable to conceive or carry a pregnancy themselves.

There are two main types of surrogacy: traditional and gestational. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate mother's own egg is used, and she is artificially inseminated with sperm from the intended father or a donor. This means the surrogate mother is biologically related to the child. In gestational surrogacy, an embryo is created using eggs and sperm from the intended parents or donors through in vitro fertilization (IVF). The resulting embryo is then transferred to the surrogate mother's uterus. In this case, the surrogate mother is not biologically related to the child.

Surrogacy laws and regulations vary significantly by country and even by region within countries. Some jurisdictions permit and regulate surrogacy, while others prohibit it entirely. The legal framework often addresses aspects such as parentage, compensation for the surrogate, and the rights and responsibilities of all parties involved.

The process of surrogacy typically involves extensive legal agreements, medical screenings for all parties, psychological evaluations, and the IVF procedure itself. Ethical considerations and the well-being of the child, surrogate, and intended parents are central to these arrangements.
