Sijaintivektori, known in English as a position vector, is a fundamental concept in physics and mathematics, particularly in vector calculus and mechanics. It is a vector that represents the location of a point in space relative to a chosen origin. The origin is typically a fixed reference point, often denoted as O.

In a one-dimensional space, a position vector can be represented by a single scalar value indicating the distance and direction from the origin along a line. In two or three-dimensional Euclidean space, a position vector is usually expressed as a combination of unit vectors along the coordinate axes. For instance, in three dimensions, a point P with coordinates (x, y, z) would have a position vector r = xi + yj + zk, where i, j, and k are the unit vectors along the x, y, and z axes, respectively.

The position vector is crucial for describing motion. Its derivative with respect to time yields the velocity vector, and the derivative of the velocity vector gives the acceleration vector. This allows for the mathematical formulation and analysis of trajectories, forces, and other kinematic and dynamic quantities. The concept also extends to more abstract spaces and is a building block for understanding more complex mathematical structures.
