Sijaintialueet, a Finnish term, translates to "location areas" or "area codes" in English. This concept is primarily used in telecommunications, specifically within mobile phone networks, to manage and identify geographical regions for the purpose of call routing and subscriber management. When a mobile device enters a new location area, it registers its presence with the network. This registration process is crucial for the network to know where to deliver incoming calls and messages to the device.

The size and boundaries of location areas are determined by the mobile network operator. They are typically designed to be efficient for network operations, balancing the need for granular location tracking with the overhead of managing numerous small areas.
