Siittiöfuusio, often translated as sperm fusion, is a crucial step in sexual reproduction. It describes the process by which a sperm cell merges with an egg cell, or ovum, to form a zygote. This fusion is the culmination of fertilization, initiating the development of a new individual.

The process begins when a sperm cell, after navigating the female reproductive tract, encounters the egg. The egg is surrounded by protective layers, typically a corona radiata and a zona pellucida. The sperm must penetrate these layers to reach the egg's plasma membrane. Enzymes released from the sperm's acrosome, a cap-like structure, aid in breaking down these outer coverings.

Upon successful penetration, the plasma membranes of the sperm and egg fuse. This fusion allows the sperm's nucleus, containing the paternal genetic material (DNA), to enter the egg's cytoplasm. Simultaneously, the egg undergoes changes, most notably the cortical reaction, which prevents other sperm from entering and polyspermy. The fusion of the sperm and egg nuclei, the pronuclei, then occurs, combining the haploid sets of chromosomes from both parents to form a diploid zygote.
