Siirtymäfraasien

Siirtymäfraasit, known in English as transitional phrases or transition words, are words or short phrases used to connect ideas, sentences, or paragraphs in written and spoken language. They serve as linguistic bridges, guiding the reader or listener smoothly from one thought to the next, thereby improving the clarity and coherence of the text.

These phrases indicate the relationship between different parts of the discourse. For instance, words like "kuitenkin" (however) signal a contrast, while "lisäksi" (in addition) suggests an addition of information. Other common categories include phrases for showing cause and effect (esimerkiksi, "siksi" - therefore), for providing examples (esimerkiksi, "kuten" - such as), for summarizing (esimerkiksi, "yhteenvetona" - in summary), and for sequencing events (esimerkiksi, "ensiksi" - firstly, "sitten" - then).

The appropriate use of siirtymäfraasit is crucial for effective communication. They help to structure arguments, prevent abrupt shifts in topic, and make complex information easier to understand. Without them, writing can feel disjointed and difficult to follow.
