Sihlsee

Sihlsee is a reservoir located in the canton of Schwyz, Switzerland. It is situated in the municipality of Einsiedeln, close to the Benedictine Einsiedeln Abbey. The lake was created in 1936 by the construction of the Sihlsee dam, a gravity dam. The primary purpose of the Sihlsee dam is hydroelectric power generation, managed by the Kraftwerke Sihltal Zürichsee AG.

The lake's surface area is approximately 10.7 square kilometers, making it one of the largest artificial lakes in Switzerland. Its maximum depth is around 18 meters. The Sihlsee is fed by the Sihl River, which originates in the Glarus Alps. The water from the Sihlsee is released through the dam to power turbines at the Dietikon power station, contributing to the electricity supply of the Zurich region.

Sihlsee is also a popular recreational area. It offers opportunities for sailing, windsurfing, and fishing. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills and forests, providing a scenic backdrop for visitors. The lake's elevation is 881 meters above sea level. During winter, when water levels are lower, parts of the lake bed may be exposed. The dam itself is a significant concrete structure and a notable feature of the area.
