Signkonvensjonen

The Signkonvensjonen, or Sign Convention, is a set of rules used in physics and mathematics to standardize the assignment of signs to physical quantities, particularly those that can be positive or negative. This convention is crucial for ensuring consistency in calculations and interpretations across different contexts.

In optics, for example, the sign convention dictates how the signs of object distance, image distance, focal length, and radius of curvature are determined. Typically, light traveling from left to right is considered positive. Distances measured in the direction of light propagation are positive, while distances measured against the direction of light propagation are negative. Similarly, upward directions are often positive and downward directions negative.
