They represent the reliable digits of a measurement or calculation. The number of significant figures in a number indicates the degree of accuracy to which a value is known.

All non-zero digits are considered significant. Leading zeros, which appear before the first non-zero digit in a number, are not significant. For example, in the number 0.0025, only the '2' and '5' are significant. Trailing zeros, which appear after the last non-zero digit, can be significant if they are to the right of the decimal point. In the number 12.30, the '0' is significant, indicating precision to the tenths place. However, in a whole number like 1200, the trailing zeros are ambiguous; they may or may not be significant. To avoid this ambiguity, scientific notation is often used. For instance, 1.2 x 10^3 implies two significant figures, while 1.20 x 10^3 implies three.

When performing calculations with significant figures, rules are applied to ensure the result reflects the precision of the input values. For multiplication and division, the result should have the same number of significant figures as the number with the fewest significant figures. For addition and subtraction, the result should be rounded to the same number of decimal places as the number with the fewest decimal places. Understanding and correctly applying the rules of significant figures is crucial in scientific and engineering contexts to avoid misrepresenting the precision of data.
