Signalingprotokoll refers to a set of rules and conventions used for establishing, maintaining, and terminating communication sessions between different network entities. These protocols are fundamental to the operation of many telecommunication and computer networks, enabling devices to exchange information about the status of connections and the services being used.

Common examples of signaling protocols include Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) used in Voice over IP (VoIP) and instant messaging, and Digital Subscriber Signaling System Number 1 (DSS1) used in traditional telephone networks. The primary function of a signaling protocol is to convey control information, distinct from the actual data being transmitted. This control information can include requests to set up a call, notifications about call progress (e.g., ringing, busy tone), and instructions to end the call.

Signaling protocols ensure interoperability between diverse equipment from different manufacturers. They define the format of messages, the sequence in which they are exchanged, and the actions to be taken upon receiving specific messages.
