Signaalimisvõrkude, also known as signaling networks, are fundamental to telecommunications and computer networks. They are systems responsible for transmitting control information between different network elements to establish, maintain, and terminate communication sessions. These networks operate independently of the user data they help to manage.

One of the most well-known signaling systems is Signaling System No. 7 (SS7), a global standard for telecommunications. SS7 networks handle a wide array of functions, including call setup and teardown, number portability, and other advanced services like prepaid billing and toll-free numbers. The architecture of SS7 involves signaling points (SPs), which are nodes that process signaling messages, and link sets, which connect these SPs.

In the context of the internet, protocols like HTTP and BGP can be considered signaling mechanisms. HTTP, for instance, signals requests and responses between clients and servers, facilitating web browsing. BGP, the Border Gateway Protocol, is crucial for exchanging routing information between autonomous systems on the internet, enabling data packets to find their paths.

The evolution of signaling networks continues with the development of IP-based signaling protocols, such as Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). SIP is widely used for initiating, managing, and terminating real-time communication sessions, including voice and video calls over IP networks. The efficiency and flexibility of modern signaling networks are vital for the seamless operation of today's interconnected world.
