Sigmoidfunktion

The sigmoid function, also known as the logistic function, is a mathematical function that produces an "S"-shaped curve. It is defined by the formula f(x) = 1 / (1 + e^(-x)), where e is the base of the natural logarithm. The output of the sigmoid function is always between 0 and 1, regardless of the input value. This makes it useful in situations where a probability or a percentage is required.

Historically, the sigmoid function was developed in the field of statistics to model population growth. However, its applications have expanded significantly, particularly in the domain of machine learning and artificial intelligence. In neural networks, sigmoid functions are commonly used as activation functions for neurons. They introduce non-linearity into the network, allowing it to learn complex patterns and relationships in data. When used as an activation function, the sigmoid squashes the input values into a range between 0 and 1, which can be interpreted as the probability of a neuron firing.

The sigmoid function has several important properties. It is differentiable, meaning its derivative can be calculated, which is crucial for training neural networks using gradient descent. It is also monotonic, meaning its output always increases or decreases as the input increases, without reversing direction. While widely used, the sigmoid function can suffer from the vanishing gradient problem, where gradients become very small during training, slowing down or halting the learning process. This has led to the development and adoption of other activation functions like ReLU in many modern neural network architectures.
