Sightsplinter

Sightsplinter is a term used to describe a specific type of visual artifact or perceptual distortion. It typically refers to a fleeting, sharp, and often disorienting flash or streak of light or color that appears suddenly in one's field of vision. These experiences are usually very brief, lasting only a fraction of a second.

The sensation of sightsplinter is distinct from a floater, which is a more persistent shadow or speck that drifts across the vision. Instead, sightsplinters are characterized by their intensity and sudden onset, often appearing as a sharp line, a bright point, or a brief streak. They can occur in various colors, though white or bright flashes are common.

The causes of sightsplinters can be diverse.
