Siderosphaeriaceae
Siderosphaeriaceae is a family of fungi within the order Sordariales. This family currently contains a single genus, Siderosphaeria, and a limited number of described species. Fungi in this family are typically found in terrestrial environments, often associated with decaying plant material, particularly wood. Their ecological role is primarily as saprotrophs, contributing to the decomposition of organic matter. Morphologically, species within Siderosphaeriaceae are characterized by their perithecia, which are flask-shaped fruiting bodies, and their ascospores, which are usually dark and septate. Research into this family is not extensive, and further taxonomic and phylogenetic studies are needed to fully understand its diversity and evolutionary relationships within the Sordariales. The limited number of known species suggests it may represent a specialized lineage within the order.
