SickleCellGen
SickleCellGen is a hypothetical gene or genetic marker that could be associated with sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. In sickle cell disease, the red blood cells contain an abnormal form of hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen. Normally, red blood cells are round and flexible, moving easily through blood vessels. However, in sickle cell disease, the abnormal hemoglobin causes the red blood cells to become rigid, sticky, and shaped like a sickle or crescent moon. These sickle-shaped cells can block blood flow, leading to pain, organ damage, and other serious complications.
The gene responsible for sickle cell disease is called the HBB gene. Mutations in the HBB gene
Research into the genetics of sickle cell disease aims to understand the specific mutations, their effects
