Sickergräben

Sickergräben are shallow, narrow drainage trenches designed to promote the infiltration of water into the soil. They are used in agricultural land management and environmental engineering to remove excess surface water, leachate from storage facilities, or other liquids by distributing them over a broad area for percolation and natural treatment by the soil.

Construction and design: a Sickergraben typically consists of a trench excavated in the ground, sometimes lined with coarse gravel or rubble, and in some designs containing a perforated pipe or drainage layer. A filtration layer such as geotextile may be used to prevent clogging, and the trench is backfilled with a porous medium and may be covered with topsoil or vegetation. In other variants the trench is an open slot with a gravel bed, connected to an inlet for water and to the surrounding soil for infiltration.

Operation: water entering the trench percolates down through the coarse material into the native soil. Infiltration rates depend on soil type, moisture conditions, and season. Regular maintenance is required to remove silt and prevent root intrusion; performance declines if fine particles fill the voids.

Applications and considerations: Sickergräben are used for field drainage, disposal or spreading of wastewater or slurry where permitted, and for projects aiming to reduce surface runoff and provide natural treatment. They can lower erosion risk but pose a potential groundwater contamination risk if not properly designed or managed. Siting, soil conditions, and regulatory compliance are essential factors in their feasibility.
