Shuayb

Shuayb, known as a prophet in Islamic tradition, is described in the Qur’an as the messenger sent to the people of Midian (also called Madyan) to invite them to monotheism, ethical conduct, and accountability before God.

His message emphasized worship of Allah alone and fair dealing in commerce. The Qur’an condemns the Midianites for cheating in measure and weight and for other forms of economic wrongdoing. Shuayb urged them to give full measure, to use honest scales, and to refrain from corruption in trade. He is portrayed as patient, eloquent, and steadfast in the face of opposition.

The people rejected him, mocked his warnings, and demanded signs. They persisted in disbelief and exploitation, and a punishment was foretold. The Qur’an describes a destructive calamity that overtook them, often rendered as a severe quake or blast, leaving their town and its inhabitants destroyed.

Shuayb is mentioned in several Qur’anic passages, notably in Surahs such as 7 and 11, and is regarded as one of the prophets who proclaimed monotheism and social justice. In Islamic tradition, his story is cited as an exemplar of patience and integrity in business, as well as a warning about defying the divine message. He is referenced across exegetical works as a model of ethical conduct and steadfastness in the face of rejection.
