Shikonin
Shikonin is a naturally occurring naphthoquinone compound derived from the roots of plants belonging to the Lithospermum genus, most notably Lithospermum erythrorhizon. It is the principal active component responsible for the traditional medicinal uses of these plants, particularly in East Asia. Shikonin possesses a distinctive reddish-purple color, which has historically been utilized as a dye. Chemically, it is a derivative of 5,6-dihydroxy-2-naphthaldehyde.
Research into shikonin has revealed a range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and antineoplastic
