Sheboygan

Sheboygan is a city in eastern Wisconsin, United States. It is the county seat of Sheboygan County and sits on the western shore of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Sheboygan River. The city serves as a regional center for government, commerce, and culture, with a harbor, manufacturing facilities, and a range of cultural institutions.

The area was settled by European Americans in the mid-19th century, developing as a port and manufacturing hub connected by rail. The name Sheboygan is of Native American origin, reflecting the region’s Indigenous heritage. Through the 19th and 20th centuries, the city grew alongside nearby industrial activity, including the surrounding Kohler area.

The city’s economy centers on manufacturing, services, and tourism, aided by its lakefront location and harbor. Nearby industrial activity, including the Kohler Company and associated facilities in the region, provides employment and economic activity. The John Michael Kohler Arts Center is a major cultural institution in Sheboygan.

Cultural and educational institutions include the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra and the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay, Sheboygan Campus, along with several public and private schools serving the community.

Sheboygan has a humid continental climate, with cold winters and warm summers, and a shoreline that offers recreational opportunities along Lake Michigan.
