Shasta

Shasta may refer to several places and things in Northern California and beyond. The most prominent is Mount Shasta, a well-known volcanic peak in the Cascade Range.

Mount Shasta is a stratovolcano located in Siskiyou County, California. It rises about 14,179 feet (4,322 meters), making it one of the highest peaks in the Cascades. The surrounding area is part of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The volcano is considered potentially active, though no eruptions have been recorded in historical times; fumarolic activity occurs at the summit and surrounding vents.

Shasta Dam is a concrete dam on the Sacramento River, about 11 miles north of Redding. Completed in 1945 as part of the Central Valley Project, the dam stands about 502 feet tall and forms Shasta Lake, the largest reservoir in California by usable capacity, holding roughly 4.5 million acre-feet. The facility is operated by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

Shasta County is a county in Northern California. Its county seat is Redding. The county includes portions of the Cascade Range and the Sacramento River watershed, with an economy rooted in timber, agriculture, and tourism.

Other uses include the Shasta brand of carbonated beverages, now owned by Keurig Dr Pepper; the Shasta people, a Native American group historically inhabiting the upper Sacramento River region; and Shasta as a given name.
