A sharps container is a rigid, puncture-resistant container designed to safely dispose of used needles, syringes, lancets, and other sharp medical devices. They are used in hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and increasingly in homes for patients who administer injections. The primary purpose is to prevent needle-stick injuries and contain contamination by keeping sharps contained and inaccessible to people and animals.

Most containers are made from heavy-duty plastic, typically polypropylene, and are intended for single use. They feature a tight-fitting lid with a narrow entry slot to minimize protrusion and reduce the risk of incidental contact. They are commonly color-coded and labeled with a biohazard symbol or the word “sharps.” Many meet standards for puncture and leak resistance, impact resistance, and tamper-evidence; some models include a fill-line indicator, overflow protection, or needle-disposal features.

Usage typically involves placing sharps into the container immediately after use without recapping needles. Containers should be kept out of reach of children and away from liquids. When the container reaches the marked fill line or is about three-quarters full, it should be closed and disposed of through an approved channel. In healthcare settings this is usually via licensed medical-waste services; in home settings, options may include mail-back programs, drop-off sites, or pharmacy take-back programs, depending on local regulations.

Regulatory guidance varies by country and region. In the United States, workplaces are required to provide appropriate sharps containers and follow universal precautions; other regions have their own rules for handling, labeling, and disposing of sharps waste, including infectious or hazardous waste classifications.
