The term is often encountered in Islamic finance and halal consumer markets, where it signals that ethical and legal principles derived from Islamic jurisprudence influence the offering. It is not a universally standardized label, and its meaning can vary between contexts.

Typically, a Shariabased entity relies on a Sharia supervisory mechanism, such as a Sharia Supervisory Board or consulting scholars, to assess compliance. The oversight usually covers prohibitions on riba (interest), gharar (excessive uncertainty or speculation), and haram activities (such as alcohol, gambling, and pork). It also involves screening investments and products to ensure they align with Islamic ethical guidelines, and may include structural approvals of financial instruments and contracts.
