Setvikus
Setvikus is a genus of small, flightless birds native to New Zealand. The genus includes two species, Setvikus arcuatus and Setvikus niger, both of which are critically endangered. Setvikus arcuatus, commonly known as the New Zealand dotterel, is a small, ground-dwelling bird with a distinctive black and white plumage pattern. It is found in the lowland forests and scrublands of the North Island. Setvikus niger, or the New Zealand black dotterel, is similar in appearance but has a more uniform black plumage. It inhabits the forests and scrublands of the South Island. Both species are threatened by habitat loss and predation by introduced species, such as rats and stoats. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their remaining habitats and reintroduce them to suitable areas. The genus Setvikus is named after the Maori word "setu," which means "to run," reflecting the birds' swift and agile movements.
