Setningsavsnittet

Setningsavsnittet is a term used in Norwegian grammar and language pedagogy to describe a sentence segment that functions as a coherent syntactic unit within a sentence. In many analyses, a setningsavsnittet corresponds to what is commonly called a clause: a unit that contains a finite verb and its typical arguments, and that can express a predication.

The singular form setningsavsnittet refers to one such segment, while a sentence that contains multiple clauses is analyzed as consisting of several setningsavsnitt. In simple sentences, the setningsavsnittet is the entire sentence; in complex or compound sentences, each independent or dependent clause may be treated as its own setningsavsnitt. The concept helps distinguish between larger sentence structure and smaller phrase units such as setningsledd (subject, predicate, object, etc.).

Usage and analysis play a central role in teaching and examining syntax, punctuation, and rhythm.
