Setneg

Setneg, short for Sekretariat Negara (State Secretariat), is a cabinet-level executive institution in the Republic of Indonesia. It assists the President and Vice President in governing and administering the state, providing administrative support, policy coordination, and ceremonial functions. Its responsibilities include coordinating policy development across government ministries, preparing official documents and communications, and managing the state protocol for official events and visits. The Secretariat also handles information services for the presidency and maintains records and documentation related to the office of the President and the Vice President.

The State Secretariat plays a key role in facilitating continuity of governance by ensuring that presidential directives are translated into administrative action, and by serving as a focal point for coordination between the presidency and other government bodies. It also oversees the organization of official ceremonies, state receptions, and other ceremonial duties that involve the President and Vice President.

Historically, the Setneg traces its origins to early secretarial offices established during Indonesia’s formation and has undergone several reorganizations through constitutional and administrative reforms. Today, it operates directly under the President and collaborates with other ministries and state institutions to support executive functions.

Organizationally, Setneg comprises various directorates and units focused on administration and general affairs, protocol and ceremonial duties, documentation and archives, and public communications. The agency is led by the Sekretaris Negara (Secretary of State), a high-ranking official who reports directly to the President.
