Sessionslaget

Sessionslaget, also known as the Battle of Sesia, was a significant military engagement during the Italian Campaign of the Napoleonic Wars. It took place on May 15, 1800, near the town of Sesia in northern Italy. The battle was fought between the French Army of Italy, led by Napoleon Bonaparte, and the Austrian Army of the Alps, commanded by Michael von Melas.

The French army, consisting of approximately 30,000 men, had been advancing southward from the Po Valley. The Austrian forces, numbering around 25,000, were attempting to halt the French advance and protect the strategic passes in the Alps. The battle began with a French assault on the Austrian left flank, which was initially successful. However, the Austrian center and right held firm, and the French were unable to break through.

The French army was forced to retreat after a prolonged and costly battle. The Austrian victory at Sessionslaget was a significant setback for Napoleon, who had been on a roll of victories in Italy. The battle also marked the beginning of the end for the French occupation of northern Italy, as the Austrians were able to regain control of the region. The battle is remembered for its strategic importance and the bravery of the soldiers on both sides.
