Serpentinisaatio

Serpentinisaatio is a geological process that involves the reaction between water and iron-rich rocks, producing serpentine minerals. This process is typically observed in areas where deep-sea environments meet hot water flows or near mid-ocean ridges. The serpentinization reaction involves the transformation of peridotite, a type of igneous rock rich in olivine, into serpentine minerals through hydration.

During serpentinization, water penetrates the minerals on the peridotite, breaking down the iron-rich silicates and releasing hydrogen. This process results in the formation of serpentine minerals, such as lizardite, chrysotile, and antigorite. Serpentinization can occur rapidly, especially at high temperatures, but it can also be a slow process at cooler temperatures.

The serpentinization process involves several stages. Initially, water infiltrates the rock, leading to the formation of recrystallized minerals.
