Serotypefree is a term used in microbiology and immunology to describe a strain of a microorganism that lacks specific surface antigens, known as serotypes. Serotypes are distinct variations within a species of bacteria, virus, or other pathogen, distinguished by their surface molecules. These surface molecules are often recognized by the host's immune system and are the targets for many vaccines and diagnostic tests.

When a microorganism is referred to as serotypefree, it implies that it does not express the particular serotype in question. This can occur for several reasons. For instance, a microorganism might naturally not produce the antigen associated with a specific serotype. Alternatively, a mutation or genetic manipulation could have occurred, leading to the absence of the serotype-determining genes or their expression.

The concept of serotypefree strains is important in various contexts. In vaccine development, understanding which serotypes are prevalent and which are absent can guide the design of effective vaccines.
