Sendemast

Sendemast is a tall structure used to support antennas for radio, television and telecommunications. They are built to elevate antennas to overcome terrain and obstacles, enabling transmission over larger areas. The term is used in German-speaking regions; in English, it is commonly translated as transmission mast or broadcast mast.

Types and design: The most common forms are lattice towers, monopoles, or guyed masts. Lattice towers are three-dimensional steel frameworks; monopoles are thick cylindrical towers; guyed masts use guy wires for support and can reach great heights. Many masts include several levels of antenna mounts, feed lines, and equipment shelters at the base.

Construction and operation: They are heavy, corrosion-protected steel structures anchored in deep foundations. They require electrical grounding, lightning protection, and safe access for maintenance. Towers are marked with lights and painting for aviation safety; their location and construction are governed by zoning, environmental, and aviation regulations.

Purpose and usage: Used for broadcasting, radio and television distribution, cellular networks, microwave links, and other wireless services. They are part of national communications infrastructure and are maintained by broadcasters or network operators.

Maintenance and decommissioning: Regular inspections, structural health monitoring, and painting; decommissioning involves dismantling and site remediation.
