Selkäydinnesteenäyte, known in English as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or spinal fluid, is a clear, colorless fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. It acts as a cushion, protecting the central nervous system from injury. Analysis of this fluid can provide valuable diagnostic information about a variety of neurological conditions. A sample is typically obtained through a procedure called a lumbar puncture, often referred to as a spinal tap. During this procedure, a needle is inserted into the lower back, between two vertebrae, to withdraw a small amount of the fluid. The collected sample is then sent to a laboratory for examination. Tests performed on selkäydinnesteenäyte can include cell counts, protein and glucose levels, and the presence of microorganisms like bacteria or viruses. Abnormal findings can indicate infections such as meningitis or encephalitis, inflammatory diseases like multiple sclerosis, or bleeding within the central nervous system. It is also used to monitor the effectiveness of certain treatments. The procedure is generally safe, but potential risks include headache and, rarely, infection.
