Selfinflate

Selfinflate refers to mechanisms and processes by which an object, device, or structure inflates itself without continuous external input of air or gas. In practical terms, self-inflation is achieved by storing energy in a preloaded gas supply, by chemical gas generation, or by integrated powered pumps that operate autonomously when triggered.

Common implementations appear in safety equipment such as self-inflating life jackets and life rafts, which use a cartridge of compressed gas or a backup gas generator to rapidly inflate upon immersion in water or manual activation. Consumer products include self-inflating sleeping pads and air mattresses that house compact pumps or gas canisters to reach full inflation with minimal user effort. In robotics and soft robotics, self-inflating chambers provide compliant actuation or rigidization through controlled inflation of elastomeric bladders.

Advantages include rapid deployment, one-action readiness, and reduced physical effort. Limitations involve reliance on stored gas or embedded hardware that can fail, sensitivity to temperature and altitude, environmental constraints, and disposal considerations for spent cartridges or chemicals. Safety and reliability depend on robust valving, leak resistance, and proper maintenance.

Historically, self-inflating devices gained prominence in the mid to late 20th century with advent of consumer air cushions and safety equipment. The term continues to apply to evolving technologies that seek autonomous volume expansion in response to triggers or environmental cues.
