Selfconditioning

Selfconditioning refers to a process where an individual consciously and deliberately influences their own behavior, thoughts, or emotional states over time. This is often achieved through the application of principles derived from behavioral psychology, particularly operant conditioning and classical conditioning. The core idea is that by understanding the relationships between stimuli, responses, and consequences, a person can systematically alter their own internal or external reactions.

For example, in selfconditioning, an individual might set up a system of rewards for engaging in desired behaviors or for achieving specific goals. This mirrors the operant conditioning principle of reinforcement, where a desirable consequence increases the likelihood of a behavior being repeated. Conversely, individuals might also use selfconditioning to reduce unwanted behaviors by associating them with unpleasant outcomes, a concept related to punishment in operant conditioning, or by creating new associations to replace existing ones, drawing from classical conditioning.
