Selfclaims

Self-claims are statements in which a person asserts something about themselves, such as attributes, statuses, beliefs, or experiences. They can be explicit—“I am a licensed plumber”—or implicit, embedded in behavior or narrative. Self-claims are common in everyday conversation, resume writing, online profiles, and political rhetoric, and they play a role in identity construction by signaling who a person thinks they are or wants others to perceive them as.

In discourse analysis, self-claims are contrasted with claims about others or with objective measurements; their credibility depends on evidence, consistency, and the context. Self-claims can be supported by verifiable evidence (certifications, work history, testimonials) or may be unverifiable or contested.

In social media and marketing, people use self-claims to establish authority, expertise, or belonging. The audience may assess claims based on prior knowledge, corroborating information, or reputation.

Ethical and practical considerations surround self-claims. They can empower autonomy and self-determination, but overly grandiose or deceptive claims can mislead audiences or erode trust. In research, self-claims by participants are treated as subjective data and may require triangulation with external measures.
