Sekvoj

Sekvoj refers to a genus of coniferous trees native to the western United States. The genus, *Sequoia*, contains only one extant species, *Sequoia sempervirens*, commonly known as the coast redwood. These trees are renowned for their immense size, holding the record for the tallest living organisms on Earth. They are characterized by their reddish-brown, fibrous bark and their preference for the moist, foggy conditions found along the Pacific coast.

The coast redwood is a long-lived species, with individuals capable of surviving for over 2,000 years. Their growth is exceptionally rapid in their youth, contributing to their towering stature. These trees are an integral part of the coastal redwood forest ecosystem, providing habitat and influencing the local climate. Historically, they were extensively logged for their durable and rot-resistant wood, but significant conservation efforts have led to the establishment of numerous parks and protected areas to preserve these giants.

The term "sekvoj" might also be used informally to refer to other large coniferous trees, such as the giant sequoia (*Sequoiadendron giganteum*), which is a distinct species but shares a common name and impressive size. While the giant sequoia is known for its massive volume, the coast redwood holds the title for greatest height. Both species are iconic symbols of the natural heritage of California.
