Sekvensflyt

Sekvensflyt is a term used in BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) to describe the directed connections that define the order of execution among flow objects in a process diagram. A sekvensflyt is depicted as a solid arrow from one flow object to another, such as from a start event to a task, from one task to the next, or from a gateway to its subsequent object. These flows establish the control flow within a process and are distinct from message flows, which indicate communication between participants.

Sekvensflyt connect flow objects such as events, activities, and gateways, and they govern how a process instance moves through the model. The path taken along sekvensflyt reflects the execution sequence: a process starts at the start event and traverses activities according to the defined sequence flows and gateway decisions. Conditional sekvensflyt may be used at gateways to indicate that a particular path is taken only when a condition evaluates to true. A default sekvensflyt can be designated to be used if none of the other conditions are met. Gateways can split or merge multiple sekvensflyt, enabling parallel or exclusive paths.

In practice, sekvensflyt should be kept clear and unambiguous to avoid misinterpretation of the process flow. They do not carry data themselves; data items are modeled separately via data objects or data associations, while message flows handle inter-participant communication when needed. The term sekvensflyt is commonly used in Norwegian-language BPMN documentation to translate the English concept sequence flow.
