Sekusesse

Sekusesse is a concept and framework for understanding sexual relationships. It is a sexual health and HIV prevention program developed in Uganda. The term Sekusesse is derived from the Lugisu language, where "sekusesse" means "to know one's value." The program focuses on promoting healthy attitudes and behaviors related to sex and relationships, especially among young people.

At its core, Sekusesse aims to empower young individuals with the knowledge and confidence to negotiate safer sex and make informed choices about their sexual health. The program emphasizes communication, consent, and mutual respect in sexual relationships. Through workshops, peer education, and community outreach, Sekusesse encourages young people to recognize and assert their own value and rights in the context of sex and relationships.

Sekusesse has been implemented in several countries in Eastern and Central Africa, with a focus on reaching young people aged 10 to 25. The program has been lauded for its innovative and participatory approach to HIV prevention, as well as its emphasis on promoting healthy relationships and attitudes towards sex. Evaluations of Sekusesse have shown modest but significant reductions in unprotected sex and HIV risk behaviors among those who participate in the program.

The Sekusesse approach has been recognized internationally as a model for effective and sustainable HIV prevention. It is an example of a community-led initiative that promotes a holistic approach to sexual health and well-being, acknowledging the complex and multifaceted nature of sexual relationships and behaviors.
