This characteristic makes them safer to handle and transport.

When a primary explosive detonates, it generates a shock wave of sufficient intensity to detonate the secondary explosive. This two-step process is fundamental to many explosive devices. Common examples of secondary explosives include TNT (trinitrotoluene), RDX (Research Department Explosive), and PETN (pentaerythritol tetranitrate). These compounds are widely used in military applications, mining, and demolition due to their stability and predictable explosive power. The sensitivity of secondary explosives can be further modified by mixing them with other substances, such as binders or inert materials, to create different types of explosive formulations. Their role is crucial in ensuring that explosives can be safely stored and deployed, only detonating when intentionally initiated by a reliable primer.
