Sekaviemäritulvivina refers to a situation where the combined sewer system experiences flooding. Combined sewer systems are designed to carry both sanitary sewage from homes and businesses and stormwater runoff from streets and other surfaces in a single pipe. During periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt, the volume of water entering the combined sewer can exceed the system's capacity. This excess water can then cause sewage to back up and overflow.

These overflows, known as combined sewer overflows (CSOs), can discharge untreated or partially treated sewage directly into nearby rivers, lakes, or other water bodies. This discharge can lead to significant environmental and public health concerns, including contamination of water sources, harm to aquatic life, and the potential spread of waterborne diseases.
