In biological contexts, cell lysis can be a natural part of a cell's life cycle or a response to external stimuli. For example, during apoptosis, programmed cell death, cells undergo a controlled lysis to eliminate damaged or unwanted cells without causing inflammation. Some immune responses also involve cell lysis, such as when cytotoxic T cells kill infected or cancerous cells by releasing cytotoxic molecules that induce lysis.

Conversely, cell lysis can be artificially induced for scientific or medical purposes. This can be achieved through physical methods such as sonication or grinding, or chemical methods using detergents or enzymes that disrupt the cell membrane. In medicine, certain treatments aim to induce cell lysis in pathogens, such as the use of antibiotics that target bacterial cell walls, leading to their lysis and death.
