Sedilis

Sedilis is a term that appears in Latin and occasionally in modern nomenclatural practice, though it does not denote a widely recognized taxonomic group on its own. In classical Latin, sedilis is an adjective meaning “of a seat” or “pertaining to a seat,” derived from sedile, meaning a seat or bench. The form is used in inscriptions and prose to describe objects or concepts related to seating and can appear in compound expressions or descriptive phrases.

In architecture and church design, the related word sedilia (plural) refers to the seating recesses found in chancels or sanctuaries. Sedilia are physical features rather than biological taxa, and the term sedilis is not the standard designation for them, but it shares a linguistic kinship as a seating-related descriptor.
