The normative feminine form of the adjective is sedativa; the masculine is sedativo, and the plural forms are sedativos (masculine) and sedativas (feminine). Because sedatoiva is not listed in major dictionaries, writers typically avoid it and prefer sedativa or phrases such as substância sedativa or efeito sedativo.

In medical and pharmacological contexts, substances that cause sedation are categorized as sedativos or sedativas. They act on the central nervous system to reduce alertness, anxiety, or agitation and may be used for sleep induction, preoperative calming, or anxiolysis. Common drug classes include benzodiazepines, certain antipsychotics, antihistamines, and some opioids in higher doses. The resulting state is described as sedation, which involves drowsiness, reduced responsiveness, and slower motor function, rather than a property of the agent by itself.

Usage notes: when describing a feminine noun, it is correct to use sedativa (uma substância sedativa; uma propriedade sedativa). The form sedatoiva, if encountered, is considered nonstandard and should be avoided in formal writing. For clarity and consistency, it is generally better to use sedativa or the noun phrase that specifies the type of agent or effect.
